This name is synonymous with Opuntia tunicata var. davisii and Grusonia grahamii, a species with a widespread distribution, but peripheral in New Mexico. In New Mexico it is found near the southern state boundary from the Rio Grande to Brokeoff Mountains. It is common in the Trans Pecos area and in northern Mexico.
