This plant occurs in the mountains of western Texas, six counties in mostly southern New Mexico, and five counties in southeastern Arizona. Its New Mexico Heritage Program rank is S4; it is not tracked as rare in either Arizona and Texas. This plant is a close relative of cultivated potatoes and is maintained in potato germplasm banks.
