This plant occurs in California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. It is in the Mojave Desert in California. It occurs mostly below 2,500 ft in elevation in southern Arizona. There are several varieties of this species and Kearney and Peebles state the most common variety, variabilis, "...is especially abundant along roadsides in the irrigated districts." It is peripheral in New Mexico.
